Thurston County Background Check
Thurston County sits at the heart of Washington State government, with Olympia serving as both the county seat and the state capital. Running a background check here means working with two main sources: the Thurston County Superior Court Clerk and the Thurston County Sheriff's Office Records Section. The Clerk handles all court case records through the Odyssey Portal and the ClerkDocs app. The Sheriff maintains law enforcement records, incident reports, and case files. Both offices are open to the public during regular business hours, and both offer ways to search and request records online, by mail, or in person. This page covers what each office holds, how to get records, and what fees apply.
Thurston County Overview
Thurston County Sheriff Background Check Records
The Thurston County Sheriff's Office Records and Public Disclosure Section is the first stop for law enforcement background check records. Six Legal Assistants staff this section and handle all public records requests from residents, attorneys, and agencies. They research crime information, maintain compliance with Washington State laws, and manage written reports, case files, photographs, computer data, and official documents.
Per RCW 42.56, the office has up to five business days to respond to all records requests. That does not mean they will deny anything after five days. It means they have that window to acknowledge the request and give a timeline. All records are subject to public disclosure laws and the exemptions listed in state statute.

The Sheriff holds records for incidents in unincorporated Thurston County and for areas where the Sheriff provides law enforcement services. If you need records tied to a specific city like Olympia, check whether that city has its own police department first. City police departments maintain their own records separately from the Sheriff.
Requests can be submitted by email to TCSORecords@co.thurston.wa.us. Include as much detail as you can: the subject's full name, date of birth, approximate date of the incident, and the case number if you have it. The more precise the request, the faster it tends to move. The office will respond with a cost estimate or a link to pay for copies if documents are available.
Thurston County Superior Court Background Check Records
The Thurston County Superior Court Clerk is the custodian of all Superior Court case files in the county. For background check purposes, the most useful records here are felony criminal case filings, judgments, sentencing documents, family law matters, civil cases, and probate records. The Clerk offers two main tools for searching and getting documents: the Odyssey Portal for case and hearing searches, and the ClerkDocs app for purchasing document copies online.
The Odyssey Portal lets you search criminal, civil, and family law cases by title or case number. Once you find a case, you can view criminal case attorneys, charges, calendars, and hearing dates. For civil cases, you can see parties, attorneys, calendars, and hearing schedules. Case and hearing information is free to view. However, public documents tied to a case are not viewable online. You have to visit the Clerk's Office kiosks in person to view those documents at no charge, or order copies through the ClerkDocs app.
Note that the Odyssey Portal only covers Thurston County. Pierce County and King County case records are not accessible through this system.

Obtaining Copies of Thurston County Court Records
The Thurston County Clerk's Office has a clear process for getting document copies. Most public documents are available through the ClerkDocs app at clerkdocs.thurstoncountywa.gov. You create a free account, search for the document you need, and pay online. Documents not available through ClerkDocs can be requested by email to tcclerk@co.thurston.wa.us. The Clerk's office will send a payment link by email once they locate the document.
Mail requests are also accepted. If you send a request by mail, payment must be by cashier's check or money order. The Clerk's office does not accept personal checks for mail requests. Make sure to include a return address and a brief description of what you need.
| Hard Copy Non-Certified | $0.50 per page |
|---|---|
| Electronic Non-Certified | $0.25 per page |
| Certified Copies | $5.00 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page |
| Mail Payment | Cashier's check or money order only (no personal checks) |
If you need certified copies for legal use, such as for an immigration application, a court filing, or a professional license, plan for the higher cost. A 10-page certified document would run $14.00 at those rates. Non-certified copies are fine for most background check review purposes where you just need to see the case records.
Thurston County District Court Records
Thurston County District Court handles misdemeanor cases, traffic infractions, civil cases under $100,000, and protection orders. These case records are important for background checks because many lower-level criminal matters, including DUI, assault, and theft charges, appear at the District Court level rather than Superior Court.
Access to District Court records is governed by court rule GR 31. Electronic case records need both a case number and the law enforcement agency code to retrieve. Records request forms are available online or at the courthouse. The email for administrative records requests is DCpublicrecords@co.thurston.wa.us. Certified copies cost $5.00 per document. If you need a recording of a court proceeding on CD, that costs $20.00 per CD.
The Thurston County District Court records page provides forms and contact information for submitting a public records request to that court specifically. Administrative records, which are different from case records, fall under court rule GR 31.1 and go through the email address above.
